What is pre-primary teacher training?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Pre-primary teacher training is a course that prepares you to teach children aged roughly 2 to 6 in nursery, LKG, UKG, kindergarten and play-school classes. It covers child development, play-based teaching methods, early literacy and numeracy, classroom routines, safety and working with parents. At APTTI it is offered online at Certificate, Diploma, PG Diploma and Integrated PG Diploma level.

What this means in practice

Young children do not learn the way older pupils do. They learn through play, talk, movement, songs and hands-on materials, and they need adults who understand how attention, language and self-control develop. Pre-primary training gives you that understanding and turns it into daily classroom practice.

What the course covers

Most pre-primary programmes, including APTTI's, follow the same core areas:

  • Child development and child psychology from 2 to 6 years
  • Teaching methods for the early years, including play-way and activity-based learning
  • Language development, early reading and pre-writing
  • Creative activities: art, music, movement and drama
  • Classroom management, routines and positive guidance
  • Lesson planning and observation-based assessment

Who it is for

The course suits school leavers who want to start a teaching career, graduates moving into teaching, teaching assistants who want a formal qualification, parents who want to understand early learning, and people planning to open a play school. Entry starts at 10th pass for the Certificate.

How the four APTTI levels differ

All four levels cover the same core areas, but depth grows with hours. The 120-hour Certificate gives you the essentials and suits assistants and parents. The 200-hour Diploma adds more practice in planning, classroom management and creative activities, which lead teachers need. The 240-hour PG Diploma is for graduates who want a thorough grounding for CBSE, ICSE, Gulf or international schools. The 480-hour Integrated PG Diploma doubles the PG hours for those aiming at senior roles or running a pre-school. Because every level is online, you can begin with a shorter course and progress later when you meet the next level's eligibility.

Practical next steps

  • Decide which age group you want to teach (play school, nursery or KG).
  • Check the entry requirement for each level against your highest qualification.
  • Compare hours, duration and fees on the fees page.
  • Ask admissions about assessment and teaching practice.
  • Apply online and start studying with 24/7 access to materials.
ExampleRiya, a 12th-pass learner in Pune, works as a teaching assistant in a play school. She takes the 200-hour Diploma online in the evenings so that she can move into a lead teacher role in an LKG class.
What to keep in mind: A pre-primary training certificate is a professional-development qualification. It is not a B.Ed or an NCTE-recognised teacher-education degree, and it does not by itself qualify you for government teaching posts.
